Cracking the AP Biology Exam 2018 Premium Edition College Test Preparation Princeton Review Books Reviews

  • This book is fine for reviewing for a class test or something but don't expect it to properly prepare you for the actual AP Bio exam! The practice tests I've been taking out of it are WAY too easy and are not telling of the difficulty of the exam.

To put it into perspective, I easily got a 5 with forty minutes to spare on their diagnostic exam. Forty minutes! Even while taking it the test felt too easy, and I did this before starting to study hardcore. (Granted I've been taking phenomenal notes all year, but I am not a good test taker and this was surprising.) A week later I took an official practice exam from the College Board and got another 5 by a matter of 3-5 points. It was with the help of some lucky guessing I assure you, as the test was horribly difficult and long. (Ok, I finished early again by about 10 minutes. But only because I got tired of checking my work. But it was still terrible.)

This book is very open-ended and gives you little guidance on how to use it. This can be good and bad. You create your own study guide. The concept reviews in this book are not bad for a prep book, but the review questions per concept are generally around 10 questions long and ridiculously easy. Explanations for the questions you do miss are not great. One thing I do really like about this book is a page at the back of every concept chapter to write down what you learned and what you need to study more. This was helpful for me and kept me from immediately forgetting what I needed to study again after I read it.

Really, this book is useful for a confidence booster and maybe a good place to start 4-5 or so months before the exam, but overall it was a waste of my money. I'm going to use Varsity Tutors questions, my Campbell biology book, college board resources, and maybe check out a Kaplan book to prepare instead. (For those of you checking out Barron's, I've heard it's also way too easy. Kaplan apparently has good questions but poor concept reviews. Best of luck to you all!)
  • I am fully satisfied with this product. Highly recommend purchasing it.
  • The book recommends you take the first practice test, review the answers and then use the book to focus on your weaknesses. One would assume that the book would point you to the areas to read in order to do so. Fat chance. There is no index (and search is a joke - you can’t do anything other than straight text searches (no ANDs or quoting of terms)). I emailed the company to ask them, and they told me to use the Table of Contents (plus “hope this helps!”). No it doesn’t. I won’t be buying any of their products again.
